PRIMARY FUNCTION: 

 

The Director of Content and Editorial Strategy, Center on Extremism (COE), is responsible for managing the COE Editorial team and, with the COE senior leadership team, is a key collaborator in developing the editorial strategy and long-term impact goals for COE and the Center for Technology and Society. The Director works in partnership across ADL departments to conceive and create best-in-class extremism-related content for reporters, government officials and other external stakeholders, while overseeing the editorial team’s work on design, production and web processes, external communications, impact and promotion.

Responsibilities

Primary:

  • Manage and develop the COE editorial team, working to ensure each individual’s professional success and growth;
  • Develop strategy for all content out of COE, assist in same for content out of the Center for Technology and Society (CTS) and coordinate with departments across the agency to ensure that COE and CTS materials are shared widely and achieve maximum impact;
  • Oversee content and strategy for breaking news coverage and major projects;
  • Serve as primary liaison between COE and other ADL departments—including BAM, Comms and others—collaborating on content strategy;
  • Hold weekly pitch meetings, encouraging COE staff to think creatively and deeply about content, audience and impact;
  • Oversee development of new content types and visualizations (e.g. video, interactive), and oversee COE relationships with outside vendors who are producing or designing COE content/special projects;
  • Manage resource production in response to extremist events/crises/news stories;
  • Train editorial staff to provide strategy and language for senior staff for responding to extremist groups and incidents.

Qualifications

Skills:

  • Well-developed managerial and interpersonal skills;

  • Able to calmly and effectively navigate high-stress situations;
  • Comfortable with politically nuanced analysis and debate;
  • Experience helping colleagues identify the most effective narrative angles and help them craft the best possible materials;
  • Ability to think creatively and collaboratively about content production and visualization;
  • Top notch writer, even under tight deadlines
  • Ability to process, retain, and remain up to date on all aspects of COE’s and CTS’s work;
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • High level of curiosity, empathy, kindness and a sense of humor.

Work Experience:

  • The ideal candidate has more than a decade as a journalist or in public relations and is able to demonstrate progressive experience and responsibility, editing different types of content and managing a team.
  • Experience and expertise with extremist subject matter (preferred)

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in English, Political Science, or similar area of study, or equivalent professional experience required.
  • Advanced degree preferred.

 

Work Environment: 

  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends when necessary to represent ADL and to attend community events.  Some travel is required. 
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.
  • ADL is a hybrid environment; this role may require 3 days in the office.

Compensation:

  • This position has a salary range of $115,000 to $134,000. This salary range is reflective of a position based in New York, New York.
