ADL’s CEO and National Director, Jonathan Greenblatt—an accomplished leader and entrepreneur in the corporate, public, and nonprofit sectors—was recruited to the organization in July 2015. ADL’s work to fight hate of all forms means fighting hate in all places. ADL’s Director of Government Relations, Countering Online Hate (Director) will play a lead role developing and executing on ADL’s federal policy agenda, focusing on combating hate, harassment and extremism online. Working closely with the SVP Policy, VP GRACE, the Center for Technology & Society (CTS) team and other colleagues across the organization, the Director will lead federal advocacy regarding technology policy-related initiatives in the PROTECT and REPAIR plans, ADL’s comprehensive frameworks for policymakers and platforms to take meaningful action to decrease extremism and online hate.



  • Serve as ADL’s lead federal legislative and regulatory strategist and advocate focusing on fighting hate online and technology policy, including the initiatives and proposals encompassed in the PROTECT and REPAIR plans.
  • Raise the national profile and advance the goals of relevant policy campaigns, such as the StopHateForProfit Campaign and the BackSpaceHate Campaign (currently focusing on anti-swatting and anti-doxxing legislation in Congress and the states).
  • Build strategic relationships with key congressional offices, committees, caucuses, and task forces, as well as with White House staff and executive agencies.
  • Obtain opportunities for ADL subject matter experts to brief and testify before Congressional and Administration bodies and officials and take a lead role in preparing such testimony and briefings.
  • Partner closely with ADL colleagues in International Affairs, COE, CTS, Law Enforcement, Civil Rights and Education to provide support for their work and to create opportunities to lift up these teams’ profiles, expertise, materials and programs with national leaders and influencers, and upon occasion, with international and state leaders.
  • Participate on ADL’s cross-organizational tech policy team. 


  • Provide content for Regional Offices’ policy initiatives.
  • Respond to media inquiries and opportunities, in close collaboration with the Communications team.
  • Assist in the development of thematic, program, and speaker ideas for events such as webinars, the annual National Leadership Summit in Washington and Never is Now in New York City.
  • Assist in building strategic coalitions with outside partners, including civil rights organizations and other civil society groups.



  • Excellent public speaking, writing and communications skills.
  • Experience advancing relevant policy agendas in Washington DC. Sophisticated understanding of policy-making processes in federal government, national political dynamic.
  • Demonstrated ability to have command of, communicate, and analyze bills and laws based on ADL policy positions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Congressional Members from both parties and across the political spectrum of both sides of the aisle.

  • Minimum of eight years significant Washington/Hill experience and leadership is required; senior role in a congressional office or committee, and familiarity with technology policy issues is preferred. 


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required. Juris Doctorate or other relevant post-graduate degree or equivalent experience is preferred.


  • Flexibility is required to work extended hours or on weekends as may be needed.

  • Occasional travel on weekdays and weekends to attend events and conferences, both domestically and internationally, will be required from time to time. Occasional travel to regional offices or to national office in New York may be required, e.g., to meet with donors or to brief staff and board members.
  • The Director likely will be required to register as a lobbyist under applicable law.
