    POSITION TITLE: Data Scientist

    REPORTS TO: VP for Law Enforcement and Analysis

    ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

     

    The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), founded in 1913, is the nation’s premier civil rights/human relations agency, fighting anti-Semitism all forms of bigotry and hate, defending democratic ideals, and protecting civil rights for all. ADL achieves its mission through disseminating information to raise awareness, education youth, training law enforcement, speaking out in defense of civil liberties, and advocating for policies and positions that promote social justice.

     

    Primary Function:

     

    The Data Scientist will join a core group of researchers and analysts, supporting the ADL’s Center on Extremism. In close consultation with other COE analysts, investigators, and other staff, the Sr. Data Scientist will design short and long term data queries to meet the COEs research and analysis needs. COE Sr. Data Scientist will leverage data to provide in-depth analysis through data science methods and technological tools used to investigate extremism and hate online. 

    Responsibilities

    Primary:

    • Provide timely data-driven research in support of research products created by colleagues
    • Plan, develop, and lead special research studies on a wide range of topics related to extremism and hate
    • Identify, monitor and evaluate large volumes of data from multiple sources pertaining to extremism and hate.
    • Implement new research technology and develop distribution process for delivery of data and research findings to Center on Extremism staff
    • Create and deliver presentation on research findings to internal and external stakeholders.
    • Work with other Center staff in planning and executing ADL responses to research findings

    Qualifications

    Skills:

    • Must have some familiarity with data and technological tools related to data collection, mapping, analysis and visualization, including but not limited to Gnip; Datasift; Webhose; Jitterbit; Heroku; Maltego; Python; SAS/STATA/SPSS; Tableau; and/or Similar programs to the above or a substitution of closely related expertise. Familiarity with R is highly recommended.
    • Basic coding and script-writing skills.
    • Meticulous attention to detail.
    • Excellent analytical and writing skills.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and ability to work in teams.
    • Excellent problem solving skills.
    • Ability to demonstrate good judgment under pressure.

    Work Experience

    • A minimum of Seven (7) years of data science, performing complex data analysis
    • Proven track record of deep research and analysis.
    • Established familiarity with issues pertaining to extremism and hate a plus

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science or equivalent combination of education & experience.
    • Master’s degree in Data Science preferred 

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    • Flexibility to work additional hours when necessary to complete work assignments. Travel required.
